Great Expectorations: Or, 800 Photons of Illumination All at Once

Welcome to the first installment of "Great Expectorations," Buzznet's new uber-underground column by reputed rock critic David Cotner. Delve deep into the obscure as he touches on under-the-radar releases, quotes Journey lyrics and finds himself at odds with an album title called "Heartcore."

Most pop-culture critics — if you actually meet them in person — when asked point-blank to recommend some good music and explain why it's any good, look at you like you're beneath them. Christ forbid we actually try to qualify something as earth-shattering and mundane as pop music! I do understand that subjectivity is objective these days — you know, because there's no accounting for taste and they do in fact make trophies for last place now — but in this less-than-humble column, just pretend for one glorious, cataclysmic moment that my word is bond, that everything I recommend is sparkling, inspirational music and that not for the merest microsecond would I as a critic steer you wrong.

OK, stop pretending. But don't stop believing. Hold onto that feeling. Street lights, people, whoa. Oh. Oh. ...

Singers in smoky rooms: the various artists on the recent The Local Anesthetic CD compilation issued by Smooch form the basis of '80s punk rock in Denver. The names — Frantix, Your Funeral, White Trash, Young Weasels, Bum Kon, Gluons, Jeri Rossi, Rok Tots, Defex, Nails — might not be immediately familiar even if you'd lived in Colorado all your life.

Frantix moved to Seattle, changed their name to "The Fluid" and have re-formed for the Sub Pop 20th anniversary series of live actions later this year.

Nails had a hit with the song "88 Lines About 44 Women," and Gluons collaborated with poet Allen Ginsberg on two of the tracks here; the Allen Ginsberg Library sits on the campus of the Naropa University in Boulder, and Ginsburg often took part in what would be called the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at the university.

            [The late poet Allen Ginsberg]

Greatly missed and not on this anthology for infinitely puzzling reasons: "Atonement" and "Perversion of a Refined Nature," tracks from Rectifier's 1981 7-inch. Rectifier were touted for a while as the American version of violent-sound merchants Whitehouse, which is by no means a bad thing, and the omission is glaring – for about 20 maniacs and autistics in the world who'd care, anyway. To put it in some amount of perspective, it's like a pizza without olives. You're allergic to olives?  What are you doing listening to pop music, then? Let me be more specific: What are you doing listening to this record? ...

Wildbirds & Peacedrums, the Swedish vocals/percussion duo of Mariam Wallentin and Andreas Werliin, offer their Heartcore CD (Leaf) as the latest entry in the new folk sweeps that seem to be giving encouragement to the unwashed masses — so to speak — but it's not entirely unfounded. While most of new folk and its adherents are merely a Bizarro World (also known as Htrae) version of mainstream alpha-male/female mating rituals — you know, all that hot garbage you thought you left behind you in 13th grade — it is in fact the music and the music alone that's even vaguely worth two sacks of sh--.

''Heartcore?'' Terrible title notwithstanding, the album is worth about eight sacks. Bluesy in the best of all possible ways and faintly reminiscent of Nina Simone, it brims with silences and the space between the notes; a space so often sadly filled up with unnecessary rack effects and compressed bass. The dynamics of space are easily spotted in the works of the best musicians — Joy Division, Van Halen, Kraftwerk, Sinatra — and perhaps illustrated best by the philosophical morsel "Less is more." Other instruments heard: glockenspiel, zither and various kinds of hand drums. ''Heartcore" is eminently worthwhile and definitely earns the Reuben Kincaid chin-stroke of approval. ...

Lest you think Africa is just all about ethnic cleansing, separatism and man-eating plants, Rough Guide comes along and saves the day yet again with another in its illuminating series of global triptychs into the heart of the goodness of the land: native music and how much more worthwhile it makes life because of it. The Rough Guide to African Street Party (Rough Guide), includes music from Mali, Mozambique, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Angola, Congo, Uganda, Kenya and Nigeria.

In case you've never been to Africa (yeah, me neither), this is a sampler of what you hear just walking down the street in various countries of the continent — the great part is that you don't have to wait for a concert, you can just do something and stand there (within reason, of course). Highlights: the "Mystic Orchestra," "Fatai Rolling Dollar" and the grunty stylings of "Dog Murras." Alternately jazzy, bluesy, rockish and Afrobeat, it's a great antidote to those stuffy world music CDs you may ordinarily hear and be turned off by due to their monochromatically over-ululating choons and dour picture sleeves. Joyous and unbridled, this energetic sampler is a necessary and bright light shining from a continent about which most Westerners know precious little, most of it bad.

 – David Cotner

Datarock on Their Track Suits: 'We Just Got Air Conditioning'

"Datarock's music is for lovemaking, so sometimes people start making love. It's kind of repulsing, but in a nice way."

Datarock's Fredrik Saroea

INDIO, California
– Don't let the name fool you:
Datarock are not a rock band. They're a dance-rock duo from Norway whose songs have been self-described as "lovemaking music." The Devo-inspired dudes took a break from recording their next timeless album to perform at Coachella – and play catch-up with Buzznet. The men in red talked backstage about the Coachella experience, track suits, Aerosmith and, of course, their upcoming album.

Buzznet: Is it a big deal for you guys to be playing Coachella?

Fredrik Saroea: It's the festival we've really been wanting to play for a long, long time. It's the festival everybody wants to play. I've actually never been here before.

Buzznet: How does it compare to other festivals you've been to?

Saroea: It sort of reminds me of my favorite festivals. Well, it reminds me a lot [of] a festival in Denmark called Roskilde and a festival in Spain. This festival is just great.

Ketil "LA Gear" Mosnes: A little touch of Hollywood, with this backstage thing ... and we love that.

Buzznet: Do you do anything special when you play a show like this?

Gear: You hang out in the sun, it's like being at a big BBQ. It's a party ... we kinda feel like we're finishing off the party tonight, so it's gonna be extraordinarily good.

Saroea: We prepare by drinking a lot of water and going to a spa ... doing a little bit of plastic surgery, rock-star rubbing.

Gear: We just got air conditioning in the suits.

Buzznet: Did you contemplate not doing the tracks suits?

Gear: Say if now Steven Tyler [of Aerosmith] was looking for Joe Perry [of Aerosmith], he wouldn't find him, but if I was looking for Fredrick ... [He points to Saroea's outfit.]

Buzznet: What's going on with the band right now? Are you on the road?

Saroea: We're in the studio right now recording new material, but [on] the 20th of May we start this six-week tour with Ladytron all over the States ... so very soon we'll be on 40 dates or so ... 40 shows in a row ... so we're relaxing for a week.

[Click picture to view the video interview.]

Buzznet: Will you be with Ladytron for most of the tour?

Saroea: Yeah, 31 shows with Ladytron. Gonna be really exciting.

Buzznet: How's the new music? Can you tell us anything about it?

Saroea: We're gonna play some of it live today. You know, it's pretty much like the stuff on the first album. We've done so many shows, and we love the reaction of the crowd when everyone's dancing, so it might be a little more of that element.

Buzznet: How do you bring that out when you're in the studio? How do you plan for music that's gonna work out well?

Gear: You go to America and you play a festival during the recording session and you go home with ringing in your ears. You'll remember how the audience reception is versus if you stay in a studio for two or three months, you're gonna make a mellow album. We go out and do some gigs to get the reactions to the songs. There are some rumors that we are gonna convince Steven Tyler to sing something ...

Saroea: He sang all the songs on the first album, so ... [He's joking, of course – 2005's Datarock Datarock didn't feature a trace of Tyler.]

Buzznet: When you're playing a show, what part of the set does the audience react to the most?

Gear: We have some songs that are in games, so you will see the gamers go like this. [He acts like he's driving a car.] Some people think we are a rock band, since it's "Datarock."

Saroea: Datarock's music is for lovemaking, so sometimes people start making love. It's kind of repulsing, but in a nice way. The reaction I like better than anything is when everyone starts crying, because it's beautiful.

Did you miss Coachella? Check out Buzznet's Coachella coverage of day one, day two and day three.

Customize Your Page

Whats the point in having a personal page if you cant customize it?

Buzznet wants you to play with your pages settings to make it uniquely yours.

To start, just sign in to your home page and click Dashboard on the right-hand panel.

From here, you can change lots of the details that define you and your page.

If you'd just like to use a customized skin created by by Buzznet, click on "Page Theme."

Choose which skin you'd like to use. The right side will give you a preview. Hit "Save" when you're satisfied.

To edit the colors on your page click Custom Colors

You will be given a set of options to switch the colors and images.

The right pane will contain a preview of your page.  The preview illustrates what your changes will look like.

For a more exact preview, click [View On Your Main Page].

If you've created a custom header for your page, upload it in the upper left. Make sure to enter the proper height of the image and choose the background color. 807x77 is the preferred size for ALL headers!

To change the color, click on the small square to bring up our new color palettes:

You can also change virtually every other part of your header as well:

We also offer the ability to add something called "Rightside Content." Here's a great example of how to use it:

On MiseryxChord's page, she has a set of images that link to galleries that appear under her profile image and Shout Out Box. You can add any customized content in this area by entering code in the "Custom Rightside Content" box:

The Themes tab lets you pick a pre-set range of colors.

Click on "Content" to make changes to how your content (videos, photos, journals, etc) appear on your page:

This is the place you can change or add your background image:

Make sure your file is a .jpg. Choose what color your background and page border will be!

If you scroll down in that section, you can also hide various parts of your page from public view:

The "Button" tab allows you to customize the color of all the buttons on your page:

Not satisfied with just changing the colors? Do you have a personalized code from a site like "Pimp My MySpace" or another profile customization site? Or are you a master of CSS coding and you'd like to manipulate your page? Click on the "CSS" tab to enter any CSS code you'd like!

NOTE: Header graphics should be 795x70 (pixel) .jpg images UNDER 200kb.

This image may take a few moments after upload to show up in the preview.

If you are uploading a custom header, enter the above CSS code. The number at the end is your header's height.

For example, if you've got a header with a height of 77 pixels, put this code in that box:

.userpage #header{height:77px;}

The tab "Default Layout" changes what other people see first when they come to your page. Want to show off your galleries? Your videos? Your journals? Choose the best option for you and click save in the upper right corner.

Under "Profile Photos," you can manage the avatar-like icon that appears whenever you post a comment, note, or forum reply:

You can add a new profile photo on the top half of the page:

Or you can manage all the profile photos you've had in the past:

Clicking "Default" and hitting save will make that image your new profile photo.

Meeting People

One of the great things Buzznet offers is the opportunity to meet people who like things you like or who have nothing in common with you.

Any time you see comments or content from someone who looks like a potential friend, just click on that member's name or picture, and you'll land on their home page.  Drop that person a note, or send a friend request.  People tend to be friendly.

At the top of a person's profile page, you're given a few options to help you make friends on Buzznet.

Send Message: Send a private message to the user.

+Favorite: Add's the member to your Favorites page. Buzznet will notify you every time that person updates their page with new content:

Your Favorites page contains large thumnails that preview the most recent piece of media that person has uploaded to Buzznet:

If you're not friends with a person, click +Friend to add them to your friends list!

Once you've made friends, you can manage them from your Dashboard. The column titled "Your Crowd" deals entirely with the people here on Buzznet:

You can arrange your top 12 friends that appear on your homepage. Use the bar along the bottom to browse through your friends to find them. Then drag them to the top box (in blue) and arrange them in the order you want them to appear.

You can also accept or deny any friend requests you see in this area:

Just click the box next to each person and choose whether you want to approve or disapprove them as a friend at the bottom:

If you're ok with everyone (or you want to deny everyone) just click the option at the top of the page:

You can also check on the status of any friend requests you've sent and withdraw them if necessary:

The final option ("Friend Settings") gives you the option to have private messages sent to you every time you're added as someone's friend or to auto-add every person who adds you:

Still, you have a better chance of turning strangers into friends by attempting to connect with like-minded individuals.

One easy strategy to discover Buzznet members who share your interests is to click the tags that have been added below photos, videos and journals.

Clicking tags takes you to a Tag Page. The Tag Page collects all the content posted by Buzznet members that is labeled with that specific tag.

The most recently posted content is displayed furthest up.

The Tag Page header bar (example above) contains links to that specific tag's Main page, Photos, Videos, Journals and the Forum.  The Tag Page header will also lead you, through the People link, to the personal pages of members who actively upload items to that tag.

Ready to make contact?  Go ahead and discuss common interests on the forums with other members.  Or navigate through the People page to locate individual users from your favorite Tags and visit their pages.

Another avenue to sympathetic souls is through the interests that you filled out on your profile.  (If you haven't listed your interests, use the 'Edit' button from your Profile Page, or select the interests option in Settings.)

The music, TV shows, movies and books you list as your favorites will display as links.  Those links lead to a page that collects everyone who has also listed that book, film, TV show or general interest as a favorite.

But even then, all of these just lead you to groups of people who have similar interests. How do you actually go about talking to these people?

We'll leave that up to our longtime, respected goddess Paxgitmo to describe that to you:

Leave interesting comments. Make them about the post you're actually commenting on; for instance, instead of your level of boredom with your hollow empty existence, be specific -'yr hott' isn't as compelling as 'your skin is the color of a gardenia corsage the day after a lucky prom night'.

Don't be mean. If you have to be mean, be interesting.

Be nice. You can't ever go wrong being honest, nice and sincere.

Don't take it seriously and you can't get hurt.

And be aware some people come here to chat, and others to write and post. Comments can be a mix of both. IF someone doesn't get back to you, it's not because they hate you. We all have lives outside of this.

And don't assume that because no one is commenting that we aren't looking at your stuff. Trust me, someone is appreciating it.

Wise words, don't you think?

Posting a Journal

Journals are where Buzznet members publish the thoughts, observations and experiences that they want to share with the world, or simply preserve for themselves.

Your journal can be a diary, a description of a place or show you’ve been to or your reaction to items in the news.

To start from your home page, click on ‘Post a Journal.’  Or, as long as you are signed in, you can select ‘New Journal’ from the bar going down the far right of each page.  Either option will take you to the journal entry form.

Place your cursor in the ‘Title’ box and type in the name or a brief description for your journal.  You can change the title at any time.

Once you have the title, place your cursor into the 'Journal Entry' box.  Now go ahead and type your journal entry in that space.

The toolbar positioned between the Title box and the Journal Entry box offers several formatting options.

Highlight a word or phrase, then select bold, italic, underlined or strikethrough to place emphasis on those particular words.

The toolbar also provides alignment options -- such as indent, outdent, aligned left, aligned right, centered  or justified -- which are applied in the same manner as the type options.  Even bullet points and lists are easy.  Simply highlight the blocks of copy you want to be formatted, then click on the appropriate icon in the toolbar.

If you are unsure what a particular icon does, scroll over it.  A text box will appear explaining the icon's function.

Horizontal rule:  lets you set a line separating different parts of the same journal.

To really liven up a post, choose the option to change the text color.

Adding a 'hyperlink' will connect a word or a phrase in your post to sources elsewhere on the Internet. First, copy the URL of the web page that you want linked in your post.  Next, highlight the word or phrase that you want to open to that outside web address.  Now click the hyper link button .  A box will appear.  Paste the target URL into the slot provided.  Click OK.  The word or phrase you highlighted in your journal post will now become blue and underlined.  Once you save your journal, that underlined word or phrase will function as a link to your target page.

If words are not enough, add pictures to your posts to illustrate your message.

To start, place your cursor within your post exactly where you want a photo to appear.  Then go to the toolbar and click on the Add Image button .   An upload window (pictured below) will open.  (The image upload process is similar to posting pictures to your galleries.)

The upload window allows you to either browse your computer for the image you want, or you can enter the URL of the image's location.  If you want to place more than one photo at a time into your post, click [Add File] at the top of the upload window.  Every time you click [Add File], a new Browse... slot will open.  Each Browse... slot will hold one image.

When you have filled all your Browse... slots, hit the UPLOAD PHOTO button.  The images you have selected will appear in your Journal Entry box.

Once the images appear, you can alter the image size and position.  To change an image's size, click on the image.  A dotted line and a series of small boxes will appear along the border of the image.  Click on any of the small boxes and drag the border so that the image either expands or shrinks.  When you release the drag, the image will remain at those dimensions.

To change the position of a photo in your post, simply highlight the image and drag it to where you want it to stay.  Changing image sizes and position takes a bit of practice; so play around and have fun with the process.

Have you changed your mind about the special treatments you've given your text?

The  button to the right on the toolbar that looks like a blackboard eraser will remove all formatting from any text.  If you don’t like the look of what you’ve done, highlight the text and hit the eraser.  The words will revert to their original condition.

If you're a fan of using HTML coding to write a journal, hit the final button:

This switches your journal from the standard "Design Mode" to "HTML Mode." Now you can code to your heart's content!

Want to see your work and check that your coding works? Click the Design Mode button:

You can switch back and forth between the two modes as much as you want.

Once your journal entry is complete, place your cursor within the Add Tags box.  Type in key words that define the subject matter of your journal post, with a comma separating each word.  For instance: Cats, musicals, Pete Wentz.

Your journal will be automatically posted on the Tag Pages for cats, musicals and Pete Wentz.  Make sure you "tag" your journal entries accurately.

Once your journal is complete and tags have been added, there is still More>> to do.

Located next to Advanced Options, below the Add Tags: box, More>> clicks open a form that allows you to add a brief summary of your journal entry, change the time and date you want the journal to display, and determines if the journal is visible to the public or kept for your private viewing only.

One last special feature offered by Advanced Options is the ability to Associate Photos.

Associated Photos is a search option that allows you to locate images from your archives or the archives of another Buzznet member, and then directly post those photos into your journal entry.

Clicking on Associated Photos will open an upload window.  Fill in the keyword and the name of the user whose archives you want to search.  Adjust the dateline for the time frame to be searched. Hit search.

When the search is complete, pertinent photos will appear in the Associated Photos upload window.  Simply click on the photos that you want associated in your journal.  These images, as you click them, will collect at the bottom of your journal as thumbnails.  Each thumbnail will automatically link back to the source URL.

By now, you should be pretty happy with your new journal post.  Press save, and your work will be uploaded to your journal page.

A notification of your new post will go out to all your Buzznet friends.  The notification appears in the bottom half of the column at the right hand side of the page when you are signed in.

Do any of your friends have new posts there now?  Check them out.  You may find some ideas for your next journal.

Posting and Managing Photos

Buzznet is loaded with tools and functions for uploading and archiving your favorite photographs, whether you shoot them yourself or collect them from other sources.

To begin adding photos, click ‘Upload Photos’ on your main page. You can access this in numerous areas:

1) At the top of your sidebar menu:

2) In your Dashboard:

3) In your actual sidebar menu:

All of these will bring you to the basic bulk upload photo page:

Click 'Browse...' to select a photo to upload from your computer.

A separate File Upload window will open (example below), listing the images available on your computer.

Scroll down the list of files until you locate the entry for the image you want to post to your page.  Click once to highlight that image's listing.  A thumbnail of the image will show in the File Upload window, and an OPEN prompt will appear.

Please note: For basic photo uploads, please make sure you files are all in the .JPG format. You can embed other filetypes elsewhere on the site, but photo uploads will only accept .JPGs.

Click OPEN:  The File Upload window will close, and your desired image's file name will appear in the File: slot of the Post Photos window (shown below).

Once the image's file name has appeared in the File: slot, type a description or title to your photo in the ‘Caption’ box, which is to the right of the File: slot.

For groups of photos, you can add a general caption in the Caption box that runs along the bottom of the Post Photos window. If you choose this option, it will override the captions you entered individually after each photo.

Click SAVE, and your photo will be added to the images on your member page.

People with a backlog of pictures may feel that uploading one photo at a time is too slow.  To upload multiple photos, click ADD PHOTO in the Post Photos window.  Each click on ADD PHOTO opens another Browse... slot.  To open five Browse... slots at a time, click ‘Add 5 Photos.’ Now go ahead and select images for each of your open Browse...slots.

Clicking SAVE will upload all of these photos at once.

Don't worry about over-browsing.  If you OPEN a photo into your File: slot, then decide you don’t want to upload that photo, click the [Remove] button to the right, and the image will disappear.

Once you've assembled all the images you want in your Post Photos window, add the key tag words describing your photos so that your work will post to the appropriate Tag Pages.

Finally, use the drop-down menu on the Gallery slot to pick which of your galleries you want these new photos uploaded to.

If you want your new photos to form a new gallery on your page, open a new browser tab and click on your Settings page.

Under My Stuff  >>> Photos, select Manage Galleries.

A Create/Manage Galleries page will open.

Here, you can tell Buzznet what to name the new gallery. The name will be converted into an @buzznet.com URL.

You should also title your gallery in the Gallery Title box and place a brief summary of what this gallery is about in the Gallery Description box. The Gallery Title is what will appear to other people when they click through your photos:

If you'd like to have contributions to this gallery from your friends, choose a Public Keyword.  This word will become part of an e-mail address that you can send out to friends who you want to contribute to your gallery.  These friends can then send any images suitable for your gallery to that e-mail address.

Galleries do not have to be public.  The Create/Manage Galleries form offers options for total privacy, or for allowing only specific friends to view the images.  You can give your gallery a password that will be required for viewing:

You can pick the friends you want viewing a specific gallery from the SELECT drop-down menu or by adding their user names in the small box on the left

The arrangement of photos within the gallery, whether from Newest to Oldest or Oldest to Newest, is as simple as clicking on the indicated circle.

Finally, an abundance of color schemes is available through the Choose Color Options link at the bottom of the Create/Manage Galleries form.  You'll be able to mix and match color themes, and preview your choices on your actual homepage.

You can also manage all of your photos and galleries at any time by going to "Manage Photos" in your Dashboard:

Click on the gallery on the right side that you want to edit.

From there, select the pictures you'd like to manage:

At the bottom of the page, you can perform multiple actions to the photos you've selected.

Clicking "Add Tags" brings up the tag bar for you to tag multiple items at the same time. This is great for tagging a gallery all at once.

Click "Change Captions" to edit multiple captions at the same time and give them all the same caption:

Based on your user permissions, there are many things you can do by pulling down the dropdown menu:

You can remove all the images, set them to public, or make them private.

You can move your photos to your main default gallery or to any sub-gallery on your page:

You can send any photos to any group that allows you to post photos:

It's easy to get carried away with all the options of Creating and Managing Photo Galleries.

Just don't forget to hit SAVE when all your gallery choices have been made.

Additionally, you can make three other edits to your photos in the "Misc Settings" section of "My Settings."

The second option allows you to change whether your newest or oldest photos come first. You can also auto-tag all photos or disallow Buzznet from automatically resizing your photos:
